Lamp Shade Design Advice from Aimee

Selecting the perfect lamp shade comes down to three golden rules: proportion, shape, and function. The shade's height should be about two-thirds the height of the lamp base, its width should double the base's widest point, and its hardware must completely hide the socket. Getting the scale right transforms your new lamp from top-heavy or awkward to an intentional design statement. (See images below for helpful pictorials)

1. Master the Proportions (The Size Rule)

To find the ideal shade measurements, break out your measuring tape and use the following guidelines:

• Height: Measure your lamp base from the bottom to just below the socket. The height of your shade should be roughly 2/3 of this measurement.

• Width (Diameter): The widest part of the shade (the bottom diameter) should be about twice as wide as the widest part of your lamp base. At a minimum, the bottom of the shade should be at least 1 to 2 inches wider than the base on all sides.

• The Harp: The metal wire holding the shade (the harp) should position the shade so it perfectly conceals the bulb socket, while leaving 1 inch or less of the lamp's neck visible.

2. Match or Contrast (The Shape Rule)

The shape of your shade should complement the lines of your lamp base:

• Curved or Round Bases: Pair round urn, globe, or teardrop bases with circular shapes like bell, drum, or empire shades.

• Angular or Geometric Bases: Square, rectangular, or heavily textured bases look best with angular shades, like square or rectangular hardbacks.

• Can't Decide? Go for an Empire shade. It features a classic taper that is widely considered the "universal fit" for almost any lamp style.

3. Choose the Right Material (The Function Rule)

Fabric and material dictate how light is distributed throughout your space.

• Ambient Lighting: Lightweight materials like linen and cotton softly diffuse light and create a warm, inviting glow perfect for living rooms and reading corners.

• Task Lighting: Opaque shades or hardback materials with metallic linings (like gold or silver foil) direct light entirely downward, making them ideal for desk lamps and reading lamps.

• Formal Elegance: Refined fabrics like silk or velvet add a decadent, classic texture suited for traditional or formal bedroom designs.
